ANS Awards – Best Mattress for Keeping Cool
In performing the analysis for the awarding of the Awesome Night Sleep (ANS) Best Mattress Award, we thoroughly assessed which mattress is the best mattress for keeping cool. (See Best Mattress Award) We took into consideration millions of data points. We objectively reviewed and rated mattresses based on algorithms, analytics, and extremely sophisticated models, rather than counting on the opinion of one person’s subjective experience sleeping on a mattress for two weeks. The competition was fierce. There are many mattresses that do an awesome job at keeping sleepers from overheating.
Furthermore, there are many ways to keep sleepers cool. Mattress companies keep heat away by having the following:
- (1) Cooling materials in the cover (Bear – Celliant Technology; Layla – Thermo-Gel; Alexander Signature Hybrid – Thermic Phase Change Cooling Fabric; Nectar – Aloe; DreamCloud – Cashmere)
- (2) Special materials added to the foam (Bear, T&N Mint Mattress – Graphite; Layla – Copper; Loom & Leaf – Medical Grade Cooling Gel; GhostBed – Aerated Latex; Alexander Signature Hybrid, Brooklyn Signature – Titanium)
- (3) Foams with open cell structure (Bear, Casper, Helix, T&N Mint Mattress, Brooklyn Signature – TitanFlex™)
- (4) Convoluted air flow foam (Alexander Signature Hybrid, Layla, Loom & Leaf)
- (5) Coils (that offer air movement) rather than foam (Helix, Saatva, DreamCloud, Alexander Signature Hybrid, Brooklyn Signature)
- (6) Alternative materials that promote air flow (Purple – Smart Grid Technology) and (T&N Mint Mattress – Ceramic Cooling Gel)
- (7) Proprietary water-powered thermal cooling and heating technology (Pod Mattress)
Our cutting-edge modeling and analytics took into consideration all of these ways. Moreover, we weighed the impact of each and synthesized how sleepers reacted. In the end, we were able to rate and rank each mattress on how well they were able to keep sleepers cool and give them an Awesome Night Sleep.
So with no further hubbub, the awarding of the Best Mattress for Keeping Cool goes to … the Pod Mattress.
The Pod Mattress has the ability to not only heat up your mattress, but to also cool it down. The Pod’s proprietary water-powered thermal cooling and heating technology features independent temperature control on each side of the bed that automatically adjusts throughout the night according to your needs. Temperatures range from 55° to 115°F.
Coming in second is the Mint Mattress. The Mint Mattress has six features to help keep sleepers cool. These features are its extremely breathable cover, its two thin barriers below the cover that allow air to circulate, its Enhanced Adaptive foam that does not trap heat like memory foam, its open-cell foam technology, and its graphite and ceramic gel found within the Adaptive foam.
Coming in third is Purple. Purple with its hyper-elastic polymer ‘Smart Grid’ technology does fantastically well at keeping heat away. Purple is followed by Bear and then Helix. Bear keeps sleepers cool with its Celliant fabric cover and graphite gel infused memory foam top layer, while Helix has individually pocketed coils and foam with an open cell structure. Please see information on all five and on the other winners below.

Sleep Cool – (see Best Mattress for Keeping Cool) The Pod Mattress is the best mattress for keeping sleepers cool. It has the ability to not only heat up your mattress, but to also cool it down. The Pod’s proprietary water-powered thermal cooling and heating technology features independent temperature control on each side of the bed that automatically adjusts throughout the night according to your needs. Temperatures range from 55° to 115°F.
Additional features of the Pod Mattress that will help you keep cool include the breathable foam layers paired perfectly with the perforated Active Grid for maximum cooling performance. See Pod Mattress Review
#2: Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress (96.11%) for Best Mattress for Keeping Cool – See the T&N Mint Mattress Review
So Cool! Like the Tuft & Needle Original mattress, the Mint Mattress will keep you cool in so many ways. Many comparable mattresses only have one or two features to keep a sleeper from getting too warm, while the Mint Mattress has six. Starting from the top, the cover (1) is not only luxurious, cozy, and plush, it is extremely breathable. Next, below the cover and above the Adaptive foam are two thin barriers (2) that allow air to flow through the foam and circulate all around the sleeper. Next, the Enhanced Adaptive foam (3) has a lot of the feel of memory foam, but does not trap heat like memory foam often does.
Still next, the mattress’s open-cell foam technology (4) allows air to freely flow throughout the mattress. Lastly, infused within the Adaptive foam are two cooling features, graphite (5) and ceramic gel (6). Graphite is a natural conductor that draws heat away from the body, while the ceramic gel absorbs underlying heat and has it dissipated through the graphite. The Mint Mattress has 30% more graphite than the Original Mattress and the upgraded Ceramic Gel absorbs five times more heat than the gel in other foam mattresses. See T&N Mint Mattress Review
#3: Purple (95.70%) for Best Mattress for Keeping Cool – See the Purple Mattress Review

Purple mattress ranks one of the highest in breathability and keeping individuals from sleeping hot. Purple hyper-elastic polymer ‘Smart Grid’ technology provides air flow channels that keep the sleeper temperature-neutral – neither hot nor cold. Instead of sleeping right on the foam, the grid formation elevates the body above the foam so air can flow freely below. Additionally Purple’s original stretch cover is not only soft and stretchable, but it is breathable to promote cooling airflow. See Purple Mattress Review
#4: Bear Mattress (95.65%) for Best Mattress for Keeping Cool – See the Bear Mattress Review

The Celliant fabric cover and graphite gel infused memory foam layer keep the sleeper exceptionally dry and cool. First, the Celliant technology is woven into the mattress cover to improve oxygenation, thereby aiding blood flow and helping the body maintain its temperature. Second, the graphite gel infused memory foam top layer combines open-cell, high air-flow foam with superconducting graphite particles. As a matter of fact, the foam dissipates heat and moisture much faster than regular foam mattresses and the graphite keeps the mattress up to seven times cooler than traditional memory foam. See Bear Mattress Review
#5: Helix Sleep (95.54%) for Best Mattress for Keeping Cool – See the Helix Sleep Mattress Review

The combination of the the convoluted air flow foam layer, the Thermo-Gel infused cover, and the copper infused foam layer help keep the sleeper cool. The convoluted air flow foam layer, shaped like an egg carton, provides great air flow and helps disperse heat very well. The Thermo-Gel infused cover provides not only a great design and comfort, but imparts coolness to the touch. Lastly, copper is an excellent thermal conductor and absorbs heat, rapidly transferring it away from the sleeper’s body. This powerful three headed combination is designed to dissipate heat more efficiently than traditional memory foam. The softer side is reported to be warmer. See Layla Sleep Mattress Review
#7: Saatva (95.48%) – for Best Mattress for Keeping Cool – See Saatva Mattress Review

The DreamCloud Mattress will definitely keep you cool! Starting from the top cover, because cashmere is a naturally moisture-wicking fabric, it will keep you many times cooler than foam or cotton. Just below the cover, the gel in the memory foam improves airflow and releases trapped heat. Further, below the memory foam, the natural latex traps heat less than regular foams. Next, the innerspring coils are perfectly spaced to promote excellent airflow. Lastly, a heat-treated cotton pad on the bottom regulates temperature to help you sleep cool. Furthermore, all features work together so you don’t overheat by sinking too far into the mattress, but rather stay cool by sleeping above it. Moreover, hybrid mattresses are the highest rated mattress type for keeping sleepers cool. See DreamCloud Mattress Review
#9: Nest Bedding Sparrow Mattress (4.8) for Best Mattress for Keeping Cool – See Nest Bedding Sparrow Mattress Review

While many mattresses have one or two different ways to keep sleepers cool, the Sparrow Signature Hybrid keeps you cool in five different ways – the fabric, the gel-infused memory foam, the responsive foam, the punched holes, and the coils. Starting with the cover, the Thermic Phase Change Fabric is designed to keep the mattress surface cool, while its gel infused memory foam helps wick heat away.
Next, the Energex™ Temperature Responsive Foam top comfort layer has a highly open, cool, and responsive polymer structure that aids in temperature regulation by drawing heat out and away from the body. Moving further down the mattress, the transition layer of SmartFlow Support foam has punched holes that maximize airflow, adding yet another way to help keep you cool.
Lastly, the Individually Wrapped Motion Isolation Coils allow significant airflow due to the spaces between coils, driving away more heat from the mattress. See Nest Bedding Sparrow Mattress Review

From the luxurious cover and spinal gel layer on top to the transition and base layers on the bottom, an individual will sleep cool on a Loom & Leaf mattress. The cover, though nice-to-the-touch and quilted with a 5/8” foam layer, is breathable. The spinal gel layer maintains a targeted cool zone to the area of the body that generally retains heat, while the gel memory foam helps sleepers stay at least 30% cooler than regular memory foam.
The top layers patented “gel-on-gel” design uses airy convoluted foam and a “gel-swirl” construction technique that provides even distribution and a cooling sensation throughout the foam layer. Lastly, the dual layer support foam has breathable airflow channels that provide for a cool night’s sleep. The cooling gel is medical grade and is typically found in Burn units at Hospitals.
